Founded in 1910, the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is one of South Africa's leading public cultural institutions, home to a collection of more than 10,000 works of art. Beyond preserving this collection, JAG remains a vital civic space where Johannesburg's cultural future can be imagined and debated.
Beyond the Gallery: Reimagining the Johannesburg Art Gallery, opening on 30 July at Keyes Art Mile, brings together architecture students from the University of Johannesburg to imagine new futures for JAG. Through speculative architectural proposals, the exhibition explores public access, adaptive reuse, heritage, urban regeneration and the evolving role of museums in the city. Beyond the Gallery: Reimagining the Johannesburg Art Gallery is open until 29 August 2026.
