The Institut Français’ (IF) Cinémathèque Afrique, a custodian of one of the most significant collections of African films from the 1960s to today, invites creators to participate in an exciting open call as part of its “Living Archives” program.
This initiative celebrates Africa’s cinematic heritage by fostering a dialogue between the past and the present. Through this programme, contemporary artists and creators are encouraged to reimagine and breathe new life into iconic works of African cinema. The goal is to revitalise these films, illuminate their histories, and amplify their relevance in today’s creative landscape.
Contemporary creators are invited to engage in a unique creative exercise inspired by elements from these seminal works – whether a scene, a line of dialogue, a costume, or even fragments of film reels. The program welcomes proposals across all creative sectors, including visual arts, music, live performance, fashion, design, and literary creation. Cross-disciplinary collaborations are highly encouraged.
Up to five projects will be selected for production support, offering creators the opportunity to present fresh perspectives on these cinematic treasures. This is a fantastic opportunity for creators across all spheres to showcase their talent and contribute to the preservation and reimagination of African cinema.
This programme seeks to breathe new life into seminal works through contemporary creations, using fresh perspectives to highlight their historical significance and enhance their impact within today’s artistic landscape.
Deadline: Applications will close once 50 submissions are received or, at the latest, on 30 January 2025.
