Mark Modimola, the artist behind the designs of the luxury playing card line Zuri Watu, shares the journey and inspiration behind this unique collection. Zuri Watu, which means “beautiful people” in Kiswahili, is a tribute to the kings, queens, and leaders who have shaped Africa’s history. IQOQO sat down with Modimola, who provided an in-depth look into the creation, challenges, and vision of Zuri Watu, highlighting its mission to reclaim and celebrate Africa’s rich heritage.
The Genesis of Zuri Watu
Duke Ata, the creator of Zuri Watu, initiated the idea in a conversation with Modimola and other collaborators. The initial concept was birthed around 2019, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Ata and Modimola’s discussions were centred on African royalty and the legacy of royalty today. They noted the widespread lack of awareness and appreciation for African history among Africans themselves due to colonisation and missionary narratives that often depicted African culture negatively.
Design and Spirituality
The design process for Zuri Watu was intricate and deeply respectful of African heritage. Modimola described the incorporation of various cultural elements, such as the rich red illustrations of Nigerian kings or the intricate cloth designs representing different periods and regions. The designs are intended to be as accurate and representative as possible, blending historical elements with a luxurious aesthetic. Spirituality played a significant role in the creation process, with Modimola emphasising the importance of protecting one’s spiritual space and being mindful throughout the project. This mindfulness ensured that the project remained true to its purpose and respectful of the cultures it represented.
Honouring African Legacies
To ensure the accuracy and depth of their representations, they collaborated with a Nigerian research company called the Republic Journal, which helped identify significant royals to include in the collection. The choice of playing cards as a medium was deliberate, reflecting historical ties to royalty and symbols of power. One of the significant challenges faced by the team was ensuring the accurate representation of the legacies of iconic African leaders. Modimola emphasised the importance of respect and thorough research in handling culture and history. The Zuri Watu cards are accompanied by a booklet that provides detailed histories of each featured figure, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their significance. The selection process was a careful one, which sometimes involved omitting figures whose stories had particularly violent or negative aspects. The goal was to create a balanced narrative that celebrates positive contributions while acknowledging the complexities of history.
Accessibility and Impact
While Zuri Watu is positioned as a luxury line, the team acknowledges the importance of making information accessible. The project aims to share knowledge and spark conversations about African history and heritage. Social media and word of mouth are crucial tools in reaching a broader audience, ensuring that the cultural richness encapsulated in the cards is accessible to as many people as possible. Zuri Watu seeks to change global perceptions of Africa and its people by presenting a luxury product that showcases the continent’s rich history and culture. By sharing these stories, Africans can take pride in their heritage and the rest of the world can gain a deeper respect and understanding of Africa’s contributions. Zuri Watu aims to inspire a renewed appreciation and a sense of pride. By connecting with their heritage, we can find motivation and a stronger sense of identity.
