Here’s a closer look at five standout films, each leaving a remarkable impression on South Africa’s animation landscape.

 1. By Two  

A heartwarming tale about resilience, acceptance, and companionship, By Two follows an old man resistant to the help of a robot sent to assist him in his daily struggles. Despite his initial reluctance, a life-altering mishap brings the two together, forging an unexpected bond. The film’s humour and emotional depth strike a balance that resonates with viewers, making it an instant favourite.

 2. Bewilderness  

A surreal environmental commentary, Bewilderness follows Bert, a lumberjack whose mission to conquer a forest leads to a mind-bending encounter with hallucinogenic pollen. The film’s vivid, psychedelic sequences immerse audiences in a visual feast while delivering a subtle yet impactful ecological message.

 3. Mirror Mirror  

This poignant exploration of identity and familial acceptance follows Jackie, who discovers a playful yet defiant boy in her mirror. As Jackie grapples with self-expression and her mother’s expectations, the story unfolds into a moving journey of understanding and love. Mirror Mirror beautifully captures the nuances of individuality and the courage it takes to embrace oneself.
