Technology can unite communities and cultures, and language plays a vital role in this. Consider times you needed to use your home language, but it wasn’t available in school or university. What about the times switching from an additional language to your mother tongue led to misunderstandings?
Imagine creating an app that teaches indigenous languages or a platform for users to engage with media and publishing. By participating in the Indigenous Language Tech Challenge, you’ll help shape a future where these mother tongues flourish in the digital age.
The Indigenous Language Tech Challenge, supported by Pendoring, IQOQO and the University of Johannesburg, encourages innovators to create tech tools that promote South Africa’s indigenous languages. Participants are tasked with developing apps, platforms, or solutions that make these languages more accessible in education, media, and daily life.
The challenge kicks off with a two-week hackathon starting 2 October 2024 and culminates with finalist presentations at the Pendoring Indigenous Language Imbizo.
The winner will receive R30,000 in seed funding.
