A well-established art space in Rosebank is seeking a Gallery Assistant and Researcher to support the management of a gallery environment and its associated programming and collection.
This role is suited to someone with formal training in art history, visual culture, museum or curatorial studies, ideally with a focus on modern and contemporary Southern African art, who is confident engaging with the public and comfortable working at the intersection of research, curation, and day-to-day gallery operations.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting exhibition and public programme development through research, curatorial input and exhibition design.
  • Conducting detailed research and writing on artworks and exhibitions. s.
  • Assisting with gallery operations, including logistics, storage, security, loans, shipping, and tracking the movement of artworks.
  • Managing exhibition production and installation, and service providers. 
  • Maintaining and managing the artwork database and related administration.
  • Actively engaging with visitors, offering informed and approachable insights into exhibitions and works on display.
  • Supporting gallery events, including assisting with simple social content around exhibitions and openings.
  • Managing relationships with artists, collaborators and partners

 

This position requires someone who is organised, adaptable, client-facing, and willing to take initiative, with the confidence to speak about art in an accessible and engaging way.
