Space Salad Studios is an award-winning indie game studio from South Africa, distinguished for its commitment to merging gaming with activism. Led by a visionary team, the studio excels in creating games that entertain while raising awareness and engagement on critical societal issues. Their latest project, P.O.O Weekly, developed in collaboration with renowned satirist Zapiro, addresses the pressing issue of youth voter turnout in South Africa. We sat down with founder Thabo Tsolo, who was also selected as part of Creation Africa Incubation Programme to delve into the studio’s mission and insights into the gaming industry.

Addressing Critical Issues Through Gaming
Youth voter turnout in South Africa has reached alarming lows, raising concerns about the future of democratic participation. Recognising the need for innovative approaches, Space Salad Studios embarked on developing P.O.O Weekly. This satirical simulation of the political landscape immerses players in decision-making roles, challenging them to elect a president and navigate policy choices on issues like energy sources and societal challenges such as load shedding. Through gameplay, players gain a nuanced understanding of governance intricacies, fostering empathy, activism, and a deeper appreciation of the political process among South Africans.
Despite their innovative approach, Space Salad Studios has encountered significant challenges along their journey. The gaming industry in South Africa remains in its infancy, with limited governmental support and funding, posing hurdles to growth. These challenges are further pronounced as a Black-owned studio, making mentorship and industry resources scarce.
To overcome these obstacles, Space Salad Studios diversified its approach, extending its reach beyond gaming into sectors like fine arts and renewable energy. Space Salad Studios’ participation in various competitions and showcases outside the gaming realm has not only bolstered its reputation but also demonstrated its adaptability and resilience in diverse fields.

Inspiring Future Generations
Central to their mission is making the gaming industry accessible to young Black children, inspiring the next generation of game developers. Initially conducting workshops in local neighbourhoods and townships, they introduced children to game development and industry possibilities. Although workshop frequency has slowed, they maintain community engagement through social media, showcasing their achievements and exemplifying Black excellence in gaming.
The Impact of Industry Recognition
Reflecting on their journey, Thabo Tsolo highlights the role of industry events like Playtopia and Comic-Con in enhancing visibility and forging partnerships. These events have provided invaluable opportunities to engage with stakeholders, fostering relationships crucial for growth. Despite accolades from institutions like Africa Tech Week and Total Energies, he emphasises the shift from focusing solely on awards to creating commercially successful games that sustain the studio’s growth and impact.

Advice for Aspiring Game Developers
For young enthusiasts entering the gaming industry, Thabo offers practical advice: leverage online resources, attend workshops, and engage with industry events. Building a foundation through self-study and networking on platforms like social media can significantly enhance visibility and career prospects.
