CLOSED: Africa – Europe, Reinventing Museums coordinator

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) is organising Africa – Europe, Reinventing Museums, a cooperation project to open a dialogue between South African and French (but more broadly European and Southern African) museums.

The three main components of the project are:
1. An international conference in Cape Town in February 2024
2. Mentoring and training sessions for young professionals of the heritage, archive and museum sector (mentees) in Johannesburg and Pretoria
3. A series of professional meetings in the sector in Johannesburg and Pretoria.


Coordinator job description

Under the supervision of IFAS, the coordinator of the project must ensure the coordination of the event agency, the expert agency and IFAS. The person ensuring the coordination of the project will assist all the aforementioned parties in the design and implementation of:

The international museum conference to be held in Cape Town in February 2024

These tasks include:

Support in definition of the concept, format and content of the international conference:

  • Define the conference’s objectives, programme, major themes, format of sessions, duration of conferences, etc.
  • Research, identification and selection of the conference’s speakers

Supervision of the preparation of the conference:

  • Participation in the project scoping steering committees: monthly meetings from August to September 2023 then fortnightly from October 2023 to February 2024.
  • Coordination of the event and the expert agencies on the progress stages of the conference, in conjunction with the steering committee and the French Institute
  • Liaising and communicating with the panelists
  • Monitoring and ensuring that the retro-planning and progress stages are respected

Support in communicating the project to the target audience:

  • Identification of key institutional partners in Africa/South Africa’s heritage, archive and museum sectors
  • Mobilisation of opinion leaders in the heritage, archive and museum sectors

Design and follow-up of the mentees programme in Johannesburg and Pretoria, following the conference

These tasks include:

Selection of the mentees

  • Advise on search channels for the best candidates
  • Drafting of the call for applications for the mentees
  • Organization and follow-up of the selection process

Supervising the mentees during the conference and the professional meetings afterwards

  • Drafting of the mentees’ programme during the conference
  • Choice of format for the meetings in Gauteng and topics covered
  • Advising the mentees’ co-written report
  • Coordination of the event and the expertise agencies on the progress stages of those days, in conjunction with the steering committee and the French Institute
  • Monitoring and ensuring that the retro-planning and progress stages are respected

Organisation of professional meetings in Johannesburg and Pretoria, following the conference

These tasks include:

Drafting of the progression programme in Gauteng

  • Choice of format for the meetings in Gauteng and topics covered
  • Coordination of the event and the expert agencies on the progress stages of those days, in conjunction with the steering committee and the French Institute
  • Monitoring and ensuring that the retro-planning and progress stages are respected

Participation in a final evaluation carried out by an external service provider (post project)


Conditions

The coordinator will mainly work at the IFAS office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, full-time (5 days a week, 40 hours).

A minimum experience of 2 years in the relevant sector will be beneficial.

The chosen candidate must be available from August 2023 until March 2024.

The position is open to citizens or permanent residents of South Africa, or applicants legally able to work in South Africa. Having a valid work permit is mandatory.

As the working environment is bilingual, fluency in French would be beneficial. If the candidate is not fluent in French, a good command of translation tools is necessary.

The remuneration for this position is R21,000.00 a month (CTC).
